A reliable transfer starts with a healthy playback deck. Review the machine before running irreplaceable tapes.
Service before a large project
Begin with observation, not force. Note the sounds, display messages and point in the operating sequence where trouble appears. This gives a technician useful evidence and lowers the chance of turning a minor fault into tape or mechanism damage.
Choose representative test tapes
Use a tape that is replaceable when comparing behavior. Keep the unit on a stable, ventilated surface and stop immediately if tape spills, the transport chatters or the machine smells hot. Never reach inside while it is connected to power.
Watch for heat and transport strain
Repeated symptoms across multiple cassettes usually point toward the deck. A symptom isolated to one tape may follow the cassette, but fragile media can also expose a marginal transport. Professional assessment is safest when recordings cannot be replaced.
When in doubt, protect the recording.
Stop playback if tape is creasing, spilling or slowing. Do not keep testing with an irreplaceable cassette.
